How To Get The Best Security With New Jersey Window Replacements

New Jersey Window ReplacementsWhen you live in just about every area of the country today, you want to be sure your home is secure. Unfortunately, the windows in our homes are the most vulnerable areas for criminal or large animal invasions.

While we live in the city and aren’t concerned with big bears breaking in through our windows, we have plenty of other activity that means break ins if our homes aren’t as secure as they should be. In fact, criminals know all about how to break in to different window types.

That makes it important for you to understand why certain window styles and types are more vulnerable when choosing New Jersey window replacements. You can also take extra steps to secure those windows if you have them in your home or ever will come across them in the future.

First of all, windows have latches instead of locks, which means easy access for criminals. Older windows often have just one latch on top that does little to nothing to keep the window secure if you know what you’re doing to bypass the latch.

Second of all, most older windows are made of single paned glass which will be easy to access with very little noise occurring when breaking it to get in to the home.

On a side note, if you have an exterior door with glass inset, you want to be sure that door still provides you with security. On older doors, you will likely find inferior, single paned glass inset. Replacing the door is your best option, especially on doors with a larger area of glass that a person’s arm can fit through.

Single paned glass is still available in window replacements, but in general today’s windows are made of much better, more durable materials as well as being fitted with two to three panes of glass. There are also ways to bolster the glass to make it more secure, which we’ll cover in a moment.

Double hung windows are windows that can be common in homes. The top half can be lowered and the bottom half raised. There’s only one latch in the center where both halves of the window overlap. It makes for easy access for a burglar by applying pressure near or on the latch and prying it in order to lift the window.

Casement style windows are also vulnerable because the are also latched. These windows open by swinging on a hinge at the top, side, or bottom. Burglars also can break a small piece of glass near the latch or just pry it open there.

Sliding windows also don’t offer much in the way of security. The locking mechanisms are also often very inadequate and easy to force open. Some older sliding windows can even be completely lifted of the track, which defeats the latch.

So what are the solutions? First, replacing the old windows, especially single paned windows with a newer model of vinyl window. Today’s vinyl window options are awesome because they come in so many style and color choices.

They offer mostly double or triple pane glass with durable vinyl construction. The glass is thicker and more resistant to breaking or cracking.

Heavy duty laminated glass can be a customized option for your replacement windows. Adding additional protective measures like window film, metal security grills on the doors of the home, and tinting the windows so criminals can’t see in will help even further while giving you protection from UV sun rays. Frosting is another option in areas where you want light but also want privacy.
